Frequently Asked Questions:
What is Whisper?
Whisper is the new and innovative local chat client for iPhone and iPod Touch. It works over either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi so you can chat to anyone nearby. There is no server involved, and no need for a cellular network connection.
What are the requirements for chatting over Bluetooth?
Bluetooth chatting is only supported on iPod Touch 2G, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS.
I've turned Bluetooth on but Whisper claims it's off. What gives?
When the Bluetooth icon in the status bar turns blue, this indicates that your iPhone or iPod has paired with another device. When this happens, Whisper will be able to tell that the network is available. Until then, Whisper will display a message indicating Bluetooth might not be turned on.
Does Whisper connect with IM clients like Skype and Google Talk?
Whisper does not at present connect to existing IM clients. If you want this feature, drop us an email using the feedback feature in the application.
How does "Request Whisper" work? Why does Whisper want to send push notifications?
Request Whisper uses the Apple Push Notification service. Whisper asks Apple to send a message to the other phone. If Whisper is installed, the phone displays the message. If the other user responds, the other phone will start Whisper and then you can chat.
Who can see my status?
Your status, photograph, and screen name can be seen by anyone running Whisper on your local network. For instance this might be people using the same Wi-Fi access point as you, or, if you have Bluetooth turned on, it could be people who are close enough that their phones can pair with yours.
Whisper is searching for people nearby. Why can't it find any?
Whisper only looks on the local network and for paired devices on Bluetooth. It does not use a server! This means you can use Wi-Fi to talk even if the Wi-Fi router is not connected to the internet. Similarly, you can use Bluetooth to exchange messages even if there is no external network point at all!
When my screen turns off, I go offline and no one can send me any messages. Why?
This "feature" is a known issue and we have submitted an update to Apple that fixes it.
